When I have something to say, here is where I say it.
I blog about music, films, books, life in general, whatever takes my fancy :)

Shift Happens
Oh yes, and our first talk was on something about the labour market, but I've managed to remember... absolutely nothing from that talk. Partly because it was the first thing and partly because it wasn't entertaining or interestingly decorated in the least (mainly just facts and figures). Whereas the people talking about gap years were a bit closer to our age, joked a bit and were generally fairly amusing (and the guy was rather attractive which didn't hurt :P - the girls who I was sitting with commented on this fact). Also, the woman who talking about interviews was very bouncy, friendly and entertaining which made it easier to remember.
Anyway, the reason for this blog was to put a link to the 'shift happens' (UK) youtube video that we were shown at the beginning of the day. It's kind of interesting - take a look. I'm not quite sure what's up with the odd celtic music - kind of morphs into war music at one point... interesting anyway. To me it kind of promotes imagery of Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli travelling over the hills and mountains hunting Uruk-hai.
Also, there's a response video that I've just come across which is entertaining (though some bits are slightly crude) - see it here. I prefer the music from this one :P. Note - it is actually a response to the US version of 'shift happens'.
I do have to say that having 'did you know?' probably isn't the best thing to have on a screen in front of a bunch of bored teenagers as it prompts the response 'did I care?'.
Yes, yes. Take a look. :)
What is marketing?
You go up to her and say, 'I am very rich. Marry me!'
That's Direct Marketing.
You're at a party with a bunch of friends and see a gorgeous girl.
One of your friends goes up to her and pointing at you says,
That's Advertising.
You see a gorgeous girl at a party.
You go up to her and get her telephone number.
The next day you call and say, 'Hi, I'm very rich. Marry me.'
That's Telemarketing.
You're at a party and see a gorgeous girl.
You get up and straighten your tie; you walk up to her and pour her a drink. You open the door for her, pick up her bag after she drops it, offer her a ride, and then say, 'By the way, I'm very rich 'Will you marry me?'
That's Public Relations.
You're at a party and see a gorgeous girl.
She walks up to you and says, 'You are very rich, I want to marry you.'
That's Brand Recognition.

You go up to her and say, 'I'm rich. Marry me.'
She gives you a nice hard slap across the face.

Regional Accents
However, I have to admit that kiwi accents can be really annoying and whiny, lol. But I still love them.
I actually find it really hard to attempt a kiwi accent nowadays. The main differences I have picked up on are how kiwis say 'e' more like 'i', whereas brits say 'e' more like 'a'. Also, we often raise the pitch of our voice at the end of a sentence (kind of like a question - but it is still distinguishable from an actual question) and we use the invariant tag 'eh' ('ay') quite a lot.
Yeah, so I just thought I'd blog about this... not sure why, I just felt like it, eh.

It seems I was wrong...
Also, today on my lunch break I saw a new Maximum Ride book which I brought home and just finished. Very good. Love those books. Also saw a new series of James Patterson's, 'Daniel X' I think it was called. I didn't borrow it today but will probs borrow it this week sometime.
Ooh, I'm loving Saturday night TV again - missed Doctor Who when it finished (and still do miss it) but now it has a promising (temporary) replacement - Merlin. Just started last weekend, I missed the first episode but watched it on the BBC iplayer. Also, Strictly Come Dancing is back on! Yay :). There's only about 3 of the guys I thought were particularly good - I thought the girls were better on the whole. Will be interested to see which girl goes out tomorrow.
Watched 'the Spiderwick Chronicles' with Carol on Thursday. Good film. Feel proud to have correctly picked out Sarah Bolger as the actress playing Mallory :). I only know her from Stormbreaker and I wasn't sure if it was her because she used a totally different accent. But I do think she's a rather good actress. The film was a bit scary, lol, but in a Doctor Who ('family night programme') scary way rather than an 'I will never be able to sleep again' way. Good fun. Love Thimbletack.
Hmm.. not doing enough college work at all this weekend (as you can see from my above comments). Was rather exhausted today from work hence why I haven't done any college work today.
Went to Michelle's house yesterday (Michelle is someone I know from church) - played an hour of badminton with Anna first and then we went over to see Michelle. Was good fun, ate dinner there and then just chatted for ages :). I like chatting. It's fun.
Anyway, must do lots of work tomorrow afternoon.
Now I'm rather tired so I think I'm going to go to bed.
Oh yes! I bought 'Bacon Sandwiches and Salvation' by Adrian Plass - very good and amusing book.
Goodnight!

200 posts!
Well, now it'll be 201 but you know...
I just thought I should inform you of this exciting fact.
Just read from the English blog (college) about how Professor Wells (academic) believes that spelling should be changed to make it simpler - more phonetic. See an article on it here.
It just seems a bit daft to me but I suppose I'm biased in a way, having pretty much learned the language rules and not being interested in learning any more...
In other news, I bought 'Brisingr', the last of the Inheritance trilogy by Christopher Paolini, the other day. I'm up to page 400 and something. Not sure exactly. Still a bit to go. It's not bad. I should really write a quick review when I've finished.
I don't think I can fully appreciate it really, having not read the other 2 books in over a year.
Also, on the same trip to Waterstones, I pre-ordered 'The Tales of Beedle the Bard'. It should be rather good methinks. I'm not hugely excited or anything, and I won't be the first person in queue to pick up my copy but I do think it will be a nice addition to the series.
Watched the last episode (I didn't realise it was only 4 episodes!) of 'Lost in Austen'. I'm glad it was that short because I think that it wouldn't work if it was really long. I actually really liked it. I found that I was continuing to watch the episodes more due to despair at what was happening to the characters than because of an excitement or expectation for the next episode. The final episode was rather lovely though. Loved Elizabeth's new hairdo :P. Felt a bit sorry for Michael - deserted for Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy. He seemed quite nice in this episode (except the punching Darcy bit - but that was only because he was jealous), but I don't know, he did seem a bit daft in the first episode. Also felt sorry for Charlotte Lucas - no husband, no best friend, feeling embarrassed and miserable. Hopefully she found happiness in Africa. Loved that Bingley and Mr Bennet had a duel. Loved the character of Mr Bennet actually, just in general; and the actor cast of course. Thought it was rather an interesting take on the character of Wickham - and I have to say I liked this Wickham rather a lot. Was slightly amused that Caroline was a lesbian.
Slight plot hole (or something) annoyed me - Lady Catherine agreed to annul the marriage between Collins and Jane so long as Amanda removed herself from society - but clearly she didn't if she went back to Darcy. So what happens with Collins and Jane? I shall assume that Darcy and Amanda both removed themselves from society, or something of that sort...
I like the whole Caroline-Wickham thing that is suggested at the end. It is disappointing that Georgiana is not more highly featured but perhaps this Georgiana is one that it is better not to know, considering her history with Wickham.
In addition to watching the final episode, I also watched the 'behind the scenes' thing on ITV3. It was rather interesting really, I always love stuff like that - particularly on wardrobe.
Anyway, it's 12.30pm and I should really get some sleep. Or I should get some more reading done - I'm slowly edging towards the end of Brisingr...
Ech, got college tomorrow, 7 lessons in a row with no lunch. Fabulous...
Got to get up early, better pack my stuff into my bag and then go to bed.
Goodnight all, sweet dreams.

Life Drawing Day etc.
I've got so much stuff I need to sort out, haven't really got my head around everything at the moment. I've still got to e-mail Ingrid and figure out when to schedule my next piano exams. I contacted Trinity Guildhall about when I can use my books until but I just realised after sending it that I may have put '.com' rather than '.co.uk' and thus I will not get a reply. I'll probs wait a week and then if I haven't had a response I'll contact them again...
Need to sort out my life drawing stuff too, I think I have to apply for a bursary or something...
*yawn*
Ech, really sleepy.
Woke up at 5.45am this morning to go swimming. Crazy, I know. Not quite sure why I decided that I should do it. Had college from 9.45am-1.00pm then went to the gym on my way home. Was totally knackered when I got back.
I tried out the recipe for the chocolate beetroot cake (sounds weird I know) from the 'Cook Yourself Thin' recipe book. It actually turned out really well - it is mega rich though so you can only have a little bit at a time, preferably with something else (ice cream, fruit, a large glass of water, anything really...). It'll last quite a while though - it was a rather large cake. I'll have to get Carol to try some next week when she comes round.
I really want to sort out a schedule for myself so that I'll actually go swimming and to the gym several times a week rather than on the Friday when I remembered... (though really it has been mainly because of the hectic stuff with starting college - but there will always be some excuse).
Also, I need to make myself practise piano (properly - not just mucking about) every day as at the moment I'm not even doing it every week and I'm hoping to take my exam before the end of the year!
Still waiting for my train pass to be posted to college so am paying £3.70 every day, rather annoying. It's actually supposed to be there by now, I'll have to check again on Monday.
Need to start driving lessons once everything has settled down a little...
I'm worried about my friend Fahima as she's going through a bit of a rough patch atm, her mum is ill and she's mega stressed as there's a lot she's had to do and the last couple of weeks she's been going to the hospital and back and stuff... Though her mum is back from the hospital now so hopefully everything will be getting better soon. Also Fahima starts Uni soon so hopefully that will all go well...
Well, my DVDs arrived the other day. Good stuff.
Anyway, I've got huge amounts of artwork to do, I'd like to get my English and Spanish homeworks done early and I've got lots of other bits and bobs to do so I'd better rush off now. I really need to get to bed before midnight tonight as I'm working from 8.50am tomorrow...
*sigh*
Sort some stuff out then off to bed methinks...

Chilli recipe
Before I type out the recipe, here are two quick things I've just remembered - I ordered '27 dresses' on DVD yesterday - great film, and I ordered a couple of pairs of glasses from Zenni Optical, they're fairly inexpensive which is good. Carol referred me to their site as she got her glasses from there. Have ordered these two pairs:

I think they're rather funky :).
Anyway, yes, chilli recipe... I've rearranged a couple of instructions and added some comments.
I got this recipe from Carol (hence the 'Carol's' in the title) as she suggested chilli as an alternative to (a) eating nothing, and (b) eating crap. I had to agree. And it's very nice. Good with chips - find the healthiest ones, least likely to give you a heart attack.
- 200g mince (used frozen - preferably smaller pieces rather than big frozen block)
- 1 onion, chopped (well, I used half because we had a half lying around...)
- 1 small tin of kidney beans
- 1 small tin of chopped tomatoes
- 1 small courgette, chopped
- 2 cloves of garlic
- 300ml beef stock
- 2 tablespoons tomato puree
- 2 chillis, outsides only, chopped (Remove all seeds - they're HOT - unless you like really hot food)
- Do chop up all the 'chopped' ingredients first, it makes it easier.
- Boil water, pour out 300ml, crumble your beef stock cube in and leave it to dissolve while continuing:
- Fry onions and chillis for a few minutes.
- Add mince and garlic cloves and continue to fry.
- Add everything else (including beef stock - swirl around a bit before pouring in) and simmer for about half an hour.
- Leave to cool a little, then put some on your plate/in your bowl and eat it.
- Later on when it's much cooler you can put it into small containers and freeze it (that is, if there's any left) and it's easy to heat up and have another day :).
Note: there is quite a bit of liquid and this does make quite a bit of chilli so use a decent sized pot.
Suggestions for other things you could add:
Enjoy!
English Language
Also, it brought up the point that you should keep a log of the books you read. I've always meant to do that just for myself - I'd like to know how many I've actually read! Perhaps I'll start now.
It suggested that you review the books you read - I'm not sure I could do that for all the books I read but certainly for some of them.
I'll probably read some of the suggested books as well - books on language (of course), I think I've read some of them partially as I used to browse the English language section in the college library when I had free time (Ok, that sounds a bit sad, but it's true).
I love all the Allan and Barbara Pease books on Women and Men (though these weren't in the language section they are a bit relevant - they talk about why men and women sometimes find it hard to communicate).
Ooh, speaking of books I read a couple of Agatha Christie books in the last couple of days - 'One, Two, Buckle My Shoe' and 'Five Little Pigs' - still to read 'Taken at the Flood'. They're Poirot books if you don't know. Gotta love Poirot.
I've been thinking about how I use language and I have to say that on my blog I'm probably not the best in terms of grammar. Also I tend to use fairly colloquial language - a lot of 'umm.../hmm...', 'Well, ', 'Yes, ' and 'Anyway...'. Hopefully I'm better with punctuation though.
*shrug*
Oh yes, I had a look on the internet for the cartoon that we were shown in class today and it took me a while but I found it!

Rather amusing really. We talked a little bit about why it was amusing and the issues that this cartoon brought up - such as age, social class, accent, stereotypes etc. I'll have to print this off and put it in my folder with my notes underneath... I should also redo my spider diagram from English as it was rather messy... Will do that a little later tonight. Ech, I've got to swap computers now so that I can print off the course handbook stuff (our network isn't working properly at the moment so we've got to print off the computer next to the printer). Also I should go get that recipe for chilli so I can type it up...
Back in a mo!
College, English, Chilli etc.
It was very nice. I am going to type up the recipe on here later on as it means if I lose the piece of paper I will still have a copy of it.
Had my first AS English Language lesson today (having swapped from AS English Lit/Lang), it was really good. I'm rather glad that I changed classes as I think it is definitely the class for me - makes me wish I'd taken it in a different year so that I could do the whole A-level. Oh well, such is life. I'm not sure I made the best impression, lol, I was slightly late due to my art teacher keeping us a bit late to look at all of our ink paintings (Oh yes - I met my new art teacher, she seems fairly nice, though it's odd that she kept us late when she seems very concerned with punctuality to her own classes... - perhaps she has the 'my classes are most important' thing that art/drama/music teachers seem to have); then I also asked my teacher to sign an exeat at the end of the lesson so I can get out of English on Wednesday. Yeah.
Anyway, Wednesday is a Royal Academy Art day thing, has been organised by college - basically it's life drawing with a 'professional' teacher. Should be interesting.
I had a bit of trouble trying to use the college website as I think my computer doesn't like it. My English homework was to read the course handbook, unfortunately my computer decided it preferred the handbook in an unreadable format so it was a bit difficult. But I rang Carol up and got her to download it and then e-mail it to me and that seems to have worked fine. It's always nice to solve problems. While I was waiting (in vain) for the course handbook to download I browsed the English Language blog - this was another thing that reminded me that my switch in subject was right for me - the articles it linked to were the sort of thing I like reading anyway, I think I'd be quite happy to sit and browse those sort of articles for quite a while really...
Hopefully I'll actually talk to someone from my English class tomorrow as I have yet to do so... apart from Jason (my teacher, or rather my 'educational facilitator').
I've now collected my new timetable from my tutor so all is well. On Thursdays I start at 8.45 and end at 4.15 and I don't get a break at all, 7 classes in a row (granted, one is choir). I don't think it'll really bother me though, I like being busy. And two of the lessons are Sign Language so that should put me in a good mood for the rest of the day :).
I gave my 'stolen' Maths books back to Chris today, was cool to see him again. He told me to let him know if I want to redo a maths module... I should really do that. I got a D and an E in my last 2 units (though it still evened off to a B overall). Not good. I've been so busy I haven't really given it much thought. I'm a bit behind on my art work, hopefully I'll be able to focus on that more soon. Also I need to e-mail Ingrid and sort out my next piano lessons. And I need to e-mail Trinity Guildhall to find out how long I've got before I can no longer use my exam pieces... Oh crap. My brain might just explode.
Plan. Make lists. Always good, I'm a list-making sort of person really. Should really sort out my driving license application too. Oh dear.
Well, having spent this time blogging I'd better go and actually read the English course handbook now, it should be rather useful. I'll come back and type up that recipe afterwards...

Mmm... breakfast
Heh, have just been watching Simple Plan's video for 'Your Love Is A Lie' and it does get you wondering a little. How stupid could this girl be - to have two boyfriends living opposite each other on the same street (already stupid), then to make out with one of them without closing the curtains. Seriously. If you're going to have more than one boyfriend then you really should plan it better. Not that I'm saying it's a good idea, it's really not but you know what I mean. Also if he can hear the guilt in your voice then you obviously aren't a good enough actress to have two boyfriends. It would never work out anyway. Eventually one of them will find out (well in this case it's the guy who's singing) and then it'll all go down badly.
Really, where do they think of these music videos?
Though I do have to say I have recently found that I do like Simple Plan's music.
Anyway, college starts tomorrow, I'm still behind on all the summer work - I've done 6 A3 pages and I'm supposed to have done 20 so I am obviously very crap at this sort of thing, I'll have to work extra hard during the term to make up for it. Oh dear, I really should have planned better.
Well, too late now, I'll just have to do what I can. One thing I can do is get off the darn computer and do some work! So I'll go do that now...
